Follow Your Bliss

Joseph Campbell (1904–1987) was an influential mythologist, writer, and lecturer best known for his work on comparative mythology and religion. He explored universal themes and archetypes in myths, legends, and stories from cultures around the world, showing how they reflect shared human experiences and spiritual truths.

When Joseph Campbell said, "Follow your bliss," he was encouraging people to pursue what brings them the greatest sense of joy, purpose, and fulfillment. This phrase reflects his belief that everyone has an inner calling or path aligned with their authentic self, and following it leads to a meaningful and transformative life.

It doesn’t necessarily mean chasing fleeting pleasures or avoiding responsibilities. Instead, it’s about aligning your actions and life choices with what resonates deeply and brings long-term fulfillment. There are a few ways that can help you attune to what will bring you fulfillment.

Discover Your True Passion:

Campbell suggested that everyone has a unique passion, talent, or purpose. By identifying what truly excites and inspires you, you align with your authentic self.

Trust Your Inner Compass:

Following your bliss means listening to your instincts and pursuing what feels deeply rewarding, even if it involves risk or stepping into the unknown.

Know The Path Will Open:

Campbell believed that when you commit to following your bliss, opportunities, resources, and guidance naturally appear. He famously said, "When you follow your bliss, doors will open where you would not have thought there would be doors."

Overcome Fear and Resistance:

Pursuing your bliss often involves challenges or societal pressures to conform. Campbell emphasised the courage needed to prioritise personal fulfillment over external expectations.

Live a Hero’s Journey:

Following your bliss is akin to embarking on your own Hero’s Journey, where personal growth and transformation occur as you embrace your unique path.

The plea, "Follow your bliss" is a call to embrace your passions and authentic purpose, trusting that doing so will lead to a more meaningful, joyful, and aligned life. It’s about stepping into your truth and allowing it to guide your journey.

Joseph Campbell’s work continues to influence psychology, literature, cinema, and personal development, inspiring people to explore their own "Hero’s Journey" and live more meaningful lives.
